#138 How ordinary people can achieve the extraordinary with Rachel Forbes

Have you ever felt like taking 10 days off from your busy work and family life to run the length of a 100 mile frozen lake in Mongolia in sub-zero conditions?

Me neither. I mean, sure, I might have considered it, but to actually commit, train, participate and fundraise for a gruelling challenge like this whilst working full time and raising a young family?

Wow. These days, with a new baby in our flat, it feels like a major achievement to make a cup of tea by 9am. Which is why I was so eager to talk to Rachel Forbes about how she found time, energy and motivation to do something so extraordinary.

It’s important to point out that although Rachel is an army veteran and former helicopter pilot, she’s not a trained athlete by any stretch of the imagination.

When the organisers of the event in Mongolia quizzed her on her experience they were expecting ultra marathons and evidence of endurance under extreme conditions. Rachel told them she’d been doing a few fun runs in parks and stealing time before work to train. But she believed in herself as an army veteran to make the grade.

Rachel’s message is clear: it’s not selfish to carve out space to pursue a singular passion. It’s hard, for sure. There will be guilt. But all of us, no matter how busy we are, can find time to do something we care about. We may have to let go of our ideas that we’re indispensable - ouch - but it’ll be worth it in the end.

If you enjoy this conversation as much as I did, you’ll be blown away by the simple truth Rachel shares with us. Rachel is living proof that #FindingTime to do what you’ve always wanted to is always within reach no matter how many obstacles you face.

I’d love to know what you take away from this incredible woman’s story.
